Summary
A shift from traditional linear vegetation succession models is observed in the Chaîne des Puys, France. Unlike the common narrative of land abandonment leading to woodland expansion, this study reveals a more complex, stochastic or chaotic trajectory where herbaceous layers dominate over shrublands. The research integrates phytosociological and agronomic field analyses with agropastoral surveys, examining vegetation dynamics across multiple spatio-temporal scales. It introduces the concept of an 'anthropic phyto-morphological mosaic' to describe these non-linear patterns, challenging assumptions about land-use intensification and its ecological consequences in mountainous regions.
