Summary

Researchers have identified two distinct aquifers with varying hydraulic conductivities in the catchments of four south-eastern outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull, Iceland. They found that glacial meltwater recharge is significantly higher—four times greater—under the glaciers compared to adjacent plains, revealing a critical link between glacier dynamics and groundwater systems. This discovery provides a new hydrogeological conceptual model that enhances our understanding of water resource evolution under climate change, as well as potential risks from floods and landslides in glacial contexts.
