Summary
A new carpological analysis of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Khirokitia, Chypre, reveals that Neolithic communities (6800-5500 BCE) relied heavily on dressed wheats as a staple food, with agricultural processing playing a central role in domestic life. Spatial analysis of plant remains shows distinct patterns between intra- and extra-mural areas, indicating specialized resource use. The study also highlights opportunistic exploitation of local plant resources, influenced by climatic or anthropogenic changes, challenging the notion of controlled Neolithic agriculture. Additionally, it contributes to ongoing debates on wheat identification in Neolithic contexts and intercontinental exchanges during this pivotal period.
