Summary
School festivities in the Habsburg Empire under Franz Joseph I served as a key tool for fostering civic patriotism and dynastic loyalty, shaping the identity of future generations. These mandatory celebrations, marking imperial birthdays, jubilees, weddings, and mourning events, instilled a sense of unity and devotion to the emperor as a benevolent father figure, transcending ethnic and religious divides. However, political rivalries among parties undermined the effectiveness of these events, weakening efforts to cultivate a shared Austrian identity amid rising nationalism. The study examines this dual dynamic through the 1908 Schönbrunn ceremony, revealing how such festivities became battlegrounds for educational influence while simultaneously reinforcing imperial loyalty.
