Summary
Sympatric freshwater eels, Anguilla marmorata and A. japonica, exhibit distinct habitat preferences on Yakushima Island, Japan, with the tropical species favoring clear, fast-flowing mainstems and tributaries characterized by larger substrates, fewer fallen leaves, higher current velocity, and lower turbidity, while the temperate species dominates stagnant, muddy environments like estuaries, backwaters, irrigation channels, and reservoirs. This segregation persists across life stages and body sizes, indicating strong environmental preferences that must be considered for conservation in sympatric zones. The study analyzed habitat use patterns using field observations to elucidate these ecological distinctions.
