Summary

Rüppell's vulture, critically endangered due to habitat degradation and poisoning, faces significant threats outside protected areas. A study using species distribution modeling (SDM) identified key habitats for the species across Kenya, with precipitation and elevation as primary predictors. Suitable habitats were found in regions like Masai Mara Game Reserve, Mount Kenya National Park, and Tsavo East National Park, but most lie outside existing conservation zones except Hell's Gate National Park. The research recommends establishing vulture sanctuaries in these unprotected hotspots to bolster conservation efforts.
