Summary

Researchers have identified a new species of air-breathing catfish, Clarias monsembulai, from the Congo River tributaries within and around Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo. This discovery is notable for its exceptionally long white barbels, which distinguish it from similar species like Clarias buthupogon. The study also revisits the classification of this species within the subgenus Clarioides, though acknowledges limited morphological data to support this grouping. Additionally, the validity of the subspecies Clarias angolensis macronema is discussed.
