Summary
A comprehensive survey of moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) in the Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia, including the UNESCO-listed Solovetsky Islands, has uncovered 47 previously unreported species. Notable discoveries include Coleophora proterella, representing the first record from Russia, Clostera albosigma, marking the westernmost European occurrence, and Bryotropha affinis, a rare coastal species predominantly found in Fennoscandia. The study also verified eight species thought to be extinct or only known from historical records and documented new localities for 318 species. With these additions, the regional Lepidoptera fauna now totals 1188 species, with an estimated 1800 species expected once further surveys are completed. This research significantly expands our understanding of the biodiversity in this remote and ecologically significant region.
