Summary

A new coastal wave forecast for the Helsinki Archipelago in the Gulf of Finland demonstrates adequate accuracy, particularly for south and southwest waves, with minimal deterioration over a 54-hour period. The study validated the forecast using seven months of wave buoy data from 2017, comparing significant wave height and peak wave period near Suomenlinna. While the model performed reliably for most directions, easterly waves were slightly overestimated. This operational tool enhances marine safety by providing timely sea state information, crucial for heavy marine traffic and emergency response in the Baltic Sea.
