Summary

Dismissed mines, once neglected, are now recognized as valuable cultural heritage assets with potential for diverse reuses. This study introduces a new methodology for the historical functional classification and interpretation of underground built heritage (UBH), offering criteria to guide enhancement projects. Applying this approach to case studies from Greece, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Poland—including the Valle Imperina dismissed mines complex—revealed best practices and challenges in repurposing such sites. The research, based on onsite inspections, proposes a framework of good practices for future projects, aiming to support sustainable reuse and preservation efforts.
