Summary
A significant portion of the global population now consists of older adults, necessitating urban environments that adapt to their needs without compromising historical integrity. This study reveals that the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Historic Centre of Porto faces persistent challenges in achieving this balance, despite its recognition for cultural significance. The research employs a systematic theoretical approach to explore Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) principles—aiming to foster inclusivity and accessibility—while analyzing policies, guidelines, and practical implementations. Findings underscore the tension between preserving heritage value and meeting modern accessibility standards, particularly for vulnerable communities like the elderly. This work lays groundwork for future scientific inquiry into AAL solutions applicable not only to Porto but also across Portuguese cities.
