Summary

Heritage Management Safeguards (HMS), adapted from biodiversity conservation, offer a promising framework for protecting the authenticity, integrity, and Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, particularly in post-apartheid South Africa. This study evaluates HMS's impact and limitations across South African sites, revealing gaps in integration and implementation. A key finding is that authenticity must be socially rooted to ensure inclusive and context-sensitive heritage management. The research proposes strategies to enhance HMS effectiveness, aiming for a more sustainable and future-oriented approach. By analyzing legal reforms, community inclusion, and sustainability initiatives, the study provides actionable insights for policymakers and heritage managers.
