Summary

Medieval urban cores, particularly during the Gothic period, exhibited a fractured yet culturally diverse nature, reflecting complex social and political dynamics. This study reveals how pre-medieval enclaves like bastides and spontaneous settlements shaped the development of historic centers in cities such as Siena, Florence, Venice, and Bruges. It also explores the theoretical relationship between urban spaces and Christianity, drawing on theories from King Alfonso and Eiximenis. Additionally, the research examines contemporary challenges faced by these historic cores, including abandonment, gentrification, and banality. The study combines historical analysis with theoretical frameworks to understand both past and present urban transformations.
