Summary
A new species of Helichrysum, H. massanellanum, has been identified within the Serra de Tramuntana UNESCO World Heritage Site on Mallorca, Spain. This discovery was made through a detailed morphological analysis that distinguished it from its previously classified subspecies, H. italicum subsp. microphyllum. The new species is characterized by unique traits such as the absence of axillary buds, shorter and less densely indumented basal leaves, and larger, fewer inflorescences. These findings were based on field observations and herbarium studies, revealing that populations previously considered part of H. italicum subsp. microphyllum are distinct enough to warrant recognition as a separate species. This study contributes to the understanding of Helichrysum biodiversity in Mediterranean regions and highlights the importance of precise taxonomic identification for conservation efforts.
