Summary

A shift from energy to water limitation as the dominant factor for midsummer drought (MSD) in the Hoh Xil region of Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has been identified, marking a significant change in precipitation dynamics. The study reveals that since 2005, the region has experienced a drying-warming trend, with altered water vapor balance directly causing MSD. Located at the transition between westerlies and Indian monsoon, Hoh Xil's evaporation capacity plays a pivotal role in MSD occurrence. This research advances understanding of precipitation anomalies on the plateau, offering insights into climate change impacts under global warming.
