Does Schistidium marginale occur in Asian Russia?

World Heritage Site: Putorana Plateau

Summary

Research on the Putorana Plateau reveals that plants previously identified as Schistidium marginale in Asian Russia are actually a new species, S. transbaicalense. This discovery was made through a combined molecular phylogenetic and morphological analysis, which showed that while S. transbaicalense shares some superficial similarities with S. marginale, it differs significantly in hair-point structure and costa transverse section. Molecular analysis placed S. transbaicalense in a distinct basal grade of the phylogenetic tree, separate from the Confertum-clade where S. marginale is found. The new species has been documented in southern Siberia and on the Putorana Plateau, with detailed descriptions, illustrations, distribution, ecology, and distinctions from similar species provided.
