Summary
A spatial analysis of 24 inscriptions from Dougga (Thugga) reveals that the locations where statues commemorating private benefactions (évergétisme) were erected correlate with the type of donation—whether monetary or in kind—and the occasions for which they were given. While epigraphic evidence of such donations is abundant, direct references to cash or food donations are rare. This study demonstrates how material culture and urban topography in Roman-era North African cities encoded social hierarchies and civic values through the strategic placement of commemorative monuments.
