Summary

Optimal intra-row spacing and variety selection significantly enhance onion yield and quality at Aksum, Northern Ethiopia. Research found that a 10 cm spacing maximized plant height, leaf biomass, and dry matter content, while the closest spacing (5 cm) produced the highest total bulb yield. Among four varieties tested, 'Melkam' emerged as the top performer in both yield and average bulb weight, whereas 'Adama Red' resulted in higher unmarketable yields. The study, conducted between 2010 and 2011 using a randomized complete block design, provides actionable recommendations for farmers in the region to improve onion production efficiency.
