Summary
A cytomolecular analysis of Abracris flavolineata, conducted in Iguaçu National Park—a significant fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest—reveals remarkable karyotypic plasticity in the species. The study identified a diploid number of 23 chromosomes in males (22+X0), with distinct heterochromatic blocks predominantly marked by DAPI+, alongside CMA3+ and dual DAPI+/CMA3+ regions, suggesting genetic diversity. Notably, 18S rDNA sites were mapped to the short arms of five chromosome pairs, with two co-located with 5S rDNA, while histone H3 genes were localized on a single bivalent. This plasticity is hypothesized to stem from vicariant events shaping the species' geographical distribution across populations.
