Summary

A novel approach to estimating soil moisture (SM) with high accuracy has been developed, combining optical satellite data indices (NDVI and NDWI), radar backscatter data, digital elevation models (DEM), and environmental covariates. This method significantly improves the understanding of horizontal and vertical SM availability and redistribution over time in the Kairouan region, Tunisia. By analyzing correlations between these data sources, researchers identified the most informative inputs for a soil hydrological model, which can support precision agriculture, land use optimization, and water resource management. The findings highlight the potential of integrating remote sensing with geospatial data to enhance decision-making in agricultural practices under varying climatic conditions.
