Summary

An international project aimed at restoring the population of forest bison, listed in Yakutia's Red Book since 2019, has shown successful acclimatization with a 12-14% annual population growth rate. The study confirms that natural and climatic conditions in Central Yakutia are ecologically compatible for these bison nurseries, supporting over 120 calves produced since the project's inception in 2006. However, the introduction process has led to increased helminth invasion, with imported bison experiencing both the death of gastrointestinal parasites and infection by local helminths. This dual impact raises concerns about the spread of parasitic diseases and potential new hosts for parasites that could affect agriculture and hunting, underscoring the need for continued research on helminth invasion during acclimatization.
