Summary
Naples' historic center, renowned for its dense and high-rise residential pattern, has long been characterized by vertical stratification—where different social groups coexist within the same buildings. This study reveals how post-war perceptions of this phenomenon as a sign of backwardness have evolved over the past four decades due to international migration, urban regeneration, and tourism. A notable finding is the recent transformation of previously undesirable dwellings into attractive short-term rental investments, which threatens to accelerate the displacement of vulnerable local residents. The research combines historical analysis with contemporary urban studies to highlight the complex socio-spatial dynamics shaping Naples' residential landscape.
