Summary

Ice melange in fjords, such as Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland, significantly influences the behavior of seiches—standing waves in water bodies. This study reveals that icebergs slow down both external and internal seiches, creating band gaps where energy propagation vanishes. When energy is introduced within these band gaps, it becomes trapped near its source, leading to localized dissipation and fragmentation of ice/melange. The research used numerical simulations of an idealized one-dimensional channel to model the fjord's hydrodynamic behavior, despite uncertainties in bathymetry and stratification details.
