Summary
Mbanza Kongo, the former capital of the Kingdom of Kongo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017, stands out as the cradle of formal education in Angola. This study reveals that Mbanza Kongo introduced a modern system of formal education in the 15th century, predating similar developments in other regions of Angola. The research highlights the significance of this intangible heritage, which is comparable to its rich material heritage. Through a bibliographic review, the study underscores the cooperative relationship between the Kingdom of Kongo and Portugal as the foundation for this educational innovation. This finding not only enriches our understanding of Mbanza Kongo's historical legacy but also underscores its pivotal role in the broader narrative of education and cultural exchange in sub-Saharan Africa.
