Summary

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, located near Azerbaijan's Caspian Sea coast, features rock art dating back to 20,000 BC. This site is significant for its historical layers, reflecting the cultural and political influences of various ancient empires and kingdoms. The region experienced Assyrian influence around 800 BC, followed by rule from the kingdoms of Manue, Urartu, and Medea. The Persian Akhemenid dynasty's dominance in the 6th century BC marked a significant period, characterized by Zoroastrian religious influence under the name Caucasian Albania. Subsequent periods included Parthian, Roman, and Arshakid dynasties, with the latter enduring until the rise of the Persian Sassanid Empire in the 4th century AD. This historical narrative underscores Gobustan's role as a crossroads of ancient civilizations, blending rock art with the political and religious dynamics of its time.
