Summary

A reinterpretation of the purpose and nature of endowed festivals on Delos challenges long-standing assumptions about their political motivations. Contrary to prevailing views, these funds did not primarily finance grand eponymous celebrations but instead supported recurring, modest rituals tied to significant family events such as marriages and deaths. This interpretation, based on a re-evaluation of the Greek accounts from Delos, suggests that the phenomenon reflects deeper aspects of personal piety rather than state or royal politics. The study highlights a unique Délien practice closely aligned with Hellenistic familial cults, offering new insights into the religious and social dynamics of the period.
