Summary

Divorce rates following France's 1884 reauthorization were highest in the Seine département, with divorced individuals predominantly residing on Paris's Right Bank and its western suburbs. A spatial analysis of 20 arrondissements and 74 suburban municipalities revealed that this distribution correlated with economic structures, social acceptance, and cultural norms, particularly enabling women to live independently post-divorce. The study also noted a marked urban-rural divide, where divorced individuals were less likely to reside in rural areas.
