Summary

Ghadames, Libya, stands as a testament to the resilience of traditional earthen settlements, showcasing a unique architectural and urban design that has thrived through centuries despite recent crises. This study highlights how Ghadames' symbiotic relationship with its oasis environment, combined with active local conservation efforts, has preserved its exceptional heritage qualities. Unlike other World Heritage Sites, the ongoing crisis in Libya caused only indirect damage to Ghadames, underscoring the importance of a comprehensive approach to conservation that integrates architecture, urbanism, landscaping, irrigation, climate adaptation, and institutional governance. The research demonstrates that such a multifaceted strategy is crucial for understanding and addressing conservation challenges in similar sites.
