Summary
A differentiated approach to pro-poor tourism (PPT) development can effectively stimulate poverty alleviation in marginalized Roma communities (MRCs), but success depends on local preconditions such as proximity to tourist centers, engagement in traditional craft activities, and the role of NGOs. This study analyzes 65 municipalities in Slovakia's Central Spiš region, revealing that while some MRCs thrive with PPT—particularly those involved in small-scale farming or near developed tourism hubs—others face significant obstacles, including high segregation levels. The research uses a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative data analysis with mayor interviews to test four assumptions about PPT feasibility. Findings underscore the need for tailored strategies rather than universal solutions, contributing to discussions on sustainable development in marginalized communities.
