Summary

Mangrove species from the Sundarbans, spanning India and Bangladesh, exhibit significant medicinal potential with diverse biological activities. This review highlights seven key species—Ceriops decandra, Xylocarpus granatum, Xylocarpus moluccensis, Excoecaria agallocha, Sarcolobus globosus, Sonneratia caseolaris, and Acanthus ilicifolius—as rich sources of bioactive compounds used in traditional medicine. While these plants are integral to local livelihoods and folk remedies for various ailments, systematic studies on their chemical constituents and activity-structure relationships remain limited. The review synthesizes existing research to underscore the need for further exploration of these species as novel sources of medicinal agents while advocating for their conservation and sustainable utilization.
