Summary

Research at the Conservation Department, Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University, has identified evolving trends in the treatment and conservation of archaeological wood from Historic Cairo since 1980. The study critically reviewed Arabic-language masters' and doctoral dissertations, revealing five key focal points: types of wood used throughout Egyptian history, assessment of wood decay, wood properties and composition, treatment and conservation of decorated wood, and the evaluation of chemicals and polymers in wood treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of historical research while highlighting shifts in conservation methodologies over time.
