Summary

A new species of conifer sawfly, Gilpinia okinawa sp. nov., has been identified from Okinawa Island, Japan, along with the redescription of two similar Japanese species, G. hakonensis and G. amamiana. The study also designates a lectotype for Lophyrus hakonensis and reveals that G. fukudai is a synonym of G. hakonensis. For the first time, male descriptions are provided for G. hakonensis and G. amamiana, with G. amamiana newly recorded from Tokunoshima Island. Additionally, the study compares ovipositors of five European Gilpinia species, including new illustrations for G. frutetorum, G. laricis, and G. variegata, while also recording G. laricis in Bulgaria. This research contributes to the taxonomy and distribution of the G. socia group within Japan and Europe.
