Summary

Despite the transformative impact of the Olympic Games on Athens' infrastructure and global image, the city's cultural tourism has continued to decline, leaving untapped potential in its rich heritage, multicultural identity, and landmarks like the New Acropolis Museum. This study, based on semi-structured interviews with top officials, reveals that Athens' tourism policy responses have not fully leveraged these assets due to challenges such as environmental degradation, traffic congestion, and a weakened socio-cultural/economic status. The research underscores the need for cultural tourism strategies to be multidimensional, aligning heritage assets with global developments to maximize their potential as cultural destinations.
