Summary
Kaziranga National Park, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site and Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA), hosts 521 bird species, including 62 globally threatened or near-threatened ones—among the highest recorded in any IBA in India. This annotated checklist identifies 35 additional species requiring further confirmation and highlights grassland-obligate birds like the Critically Endangered Bengal Florican as key conservation priorities. The study, based on field observations and birdwatcher data, also addresses recent taxonomic changes affecting avian classifications. With its diverse grassland ecosystems covering over half of its 1,302 sq. km area, Kaziranga emerges not only as a critical habitat for the iconic One-horned Rhinoceros but also as a premier global destination for birdwatching.
