Summary
Desertification poses significant environmental, economic, and social threats to Kazakhstan, particularly in its southern and western regions. The study reveals that while these areas are prone to desertification due to arid and semi-arid conditions, preventive measures implemented during the Soviet era have since stagnated or been incompletely executed post-independence. Despite recent international and state-level initiatives, the effectiveness of these efforts remains limited, necessitating further in-depth research. The analysis examined spatial distribution, historical formation processes, and adverse impacts of desertification, highlighting the urgent need for sustained action to mitigate its effects.
