Summary

Amiens Cathedral's portal, created in the fourteenth century, depicts relic processions that were no longer practiced by Ouen’s time. While these images may have reflected contemporary civic processions, the movement of relics on an ad hoc basis was more a matter of memory than practice. The study highlights how the cult of relics underwent significant transformation by the end of the twelfth century, altering both documentation and character of relic movement. It challenges modern perceptions of timeless, communal relic processions, emphasizing their historical specificity and changeability.
