Summary

A long-standing critique of James Wyatt's restoration work on Durham Cathedral, dating back to 1795, has been challenged by new research. While Wyatt is often blamed for insensitive alterations during the 1777–1803 restoration campaign, evidence shows he was not involved until 1794 and had no role after 1798. This study re-examines the historical record to correct misattributions and reassess the impact of these restorations on the cathedral's fabric.
