Summary
Lord Howe Island Group boasts the highest recorded freshwater macroinvertebrate richness per unit area (3.9 taxa/km²), with 54 taxa identified, including two undescribed chironomid species. The survey revealed high endemism across most taxonomic groups, though further genetic analysis is needed to confirm true levels of endemism compared to nearby islands. The majority of taxa belonged to Insecta, with notable contributions from Diptera (15 species), Hemipterans (5 species), and Trichopterans (5 species). Additional arthropods, gastropods, and mites were also documented, highlighting the island's unique biodiversity despite its small size.
