Summary

A critical reassessment of the 'theory of transplantation' challenges its long-standing claim that Hispanic-American universities were mere replicas of the University of Salamanca under colonial rule. The study argues that this perspective oversimplifies the origins and evolution of these institutions by ignoring their diverse models, which adapted to local social, economic, political, academic, and religious conditions in the New World and the Philippines. By analyzing historiography and moving beyond superficial comparisons of normative texts, the research proposes alternative explanations for the establishment and development of universities across the Atlantic and Pacific regions.
