Summary
Albanian agricultural reforms in the Gjirokastra region have led to significant fragmentation of land parcels, with an average size of 1.26 hectares per family, hindering economic activity and income generation. The study highlights that the distribution of land in 1990 resulted in small, often distant or low-quality plots, further exacerbated by rural emigration. While consolidation efforts are underway, progress is slow, and incomplete land registration remains a barrier to land renting and agricultural expansion. These findings underscore the need for targeted policies to consolidate parcels, streamline land registration, and stimulate economic activity in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
