Summary
A new, persistent lagoon, Bellaât 1, has emerged within the Banc d'Arguin National Park (PNBA) due to a localized breach in the coastal barrier and marine incursion into inland areas. This phenomenon, previously unrecorded, raises questions about its natural origins or potential link to rising sea levels. Authorities conducted multiple follow-up missions to assess the timing, causes, and ecological impacts of the breach. Preliminary findings highlight the need for cautious monitoring of similar marine incursions in urban coastal zones across Mauritania.
