Summary

A surge in the use of figural consoles, particularly in the Neckar region, marked a significant shift in late Gothic architecture around 1480. This study reveals that while such decorative elements were rare and likely imported from France or the Rhineland before this period, their widespread adoption—culminating in nearly 500 representations across 50 churches by 1520—signals a distinct local development. The research traces this evolution through stylistic analysis, noting connections to French Zisterzienser workshops and the Cologne Cathedral's building site, while also identifying regional variations, such as those attributed to the 'Reißnadelmeister' in Ulm.
