Summary
Monte San Giorgio, a globally significant UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning Switzerland and Italy, has emerged as a pivotal locality for understanding Triassic marine ecosystems. The site's remarkable fossil record, particularly its Konservat-Lagerstätten, preserves articulated skeletons of marine reptiles and other vertebrates and invertebrates, offering unprecedented insights into ancient biodiversity. Over the past century, systematic excavations led by Bernhard Peyer from the University of Zurich have yielded a wealth of data, including groundbreaking discoveries that gained international relevance with the identification of similar fossil-rich sites in China. Advanced methodologies, such as computed tomography (CT), have further enriched research, particularly by revealing intricate details of endocranial anatomy in tetrapods. This special issue commemorates these centennial efforts and their profound impact on global paleontological research.
