Summary

A recent study reveals significant water quality degradation in Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and its buffer zone, driven by rising tourism pressures. Analysis of 39 water samples from rivers and springs showed elevated levels of heavy metals, notably sodium (Na) and magnesium (Mg), surpassing previous reports. Iron concentrations exceeded WHO and Nepalese drinking water standards in 46% of samples, indicating accelerated pollution despite overall compliance with safety guidelines. The research highlights the urgent need to address anthropogenic sources like solid waste and poor sanitation infrastructure to mitigate environmental and health risks.
