Summary
Mangrove-mudflat connectivity significantly shapes benthic communities in tropical intertidal systems, revealing both direct and indirect effects on macrobenthic composition and species abundance. Researchers developed a mangrove connectivity index (MCI) to quantify the relationship between mudflats and adjacent mangrove stands in the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that MCI influenced benthic communities directly and indirectly through microphytobenthos activity, while sediment properties also played an independent but interconnected role. This study underscores the importance of considering seascape structure for integrative conservation efforts, particularly in protecting critical habitats for endangered fish and waders.
