Summary
Island ecosystems, particularly those within Brazil's coastal regions and Atlantic Forest, hold strategic significance for sustainable development due to their unique bio-physical and socio-environmental characteristics. The University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) has pioneered research and preservation efforts on Ilha Grande, leveraging its former prison facilities to establish the Ecomuseu Ilha Grande—a multifaceted initiative comprising a jail museum, environmental museum, botanical park, and multimedia center. This study highlights how the ecomuseum serves as a pivotal tool for integrating conservation, research, and sociocultural communication in a UNESCO-listed site. By synthesizing early fieldwork and outreach activities, the research underscores the potential of such institutions to bridge ecological preservation with community engagement.
