Summary
This study reveals the complex interplay between archaeology, indigenous communities, and heritage management, highlighting how non-hierarchical collaboration can shape the interpretation of cultural landscapes. Focusing on the National Archeological Park of Tierradentro in Colombia, the research demonstrates that community rejection of a proposed archaeological park—rooted in indigenous perspectives and contemporary socio-political contexts—can be better understood through ethnographic engagement rather than traditional archaeological frameworks. The study employs archaeo-ethnography, a method that blends participant observation with native categorizations to analyze relationships between communities, institutions, and academia, offering insights into the challenges of inclusive heritage governance.
