Summary
Research reveals significant variation in genome size among Vitis vinifera L. landraces and cultivars in Ibiza and Formentera, Balearic Islands, with 2C values ranging from 1.09 pg to 1.28 pg. Statistically significant differences were observed in specific landraces ('AG1' and 'AG2') and cultivars ('Santa Magdalena', 'Garnatxa', 'Danugue', and 'Valencí tinto/Grumier'), as well as within accessions of the 'AG2' landrace group and 'Beba' cultivar. No notable differences in genome size were found between islands, marking this study as the first to report such data for Spanish Vitis accessions. The findings suggest potential relationships between genome size, adaptations to climate conditions, crop management, and ripening characteristics, warranting further investigation.
