Summary

A novel integration of laser scanning (TLS) and photogrammetry enhances the accuracy and completeness of Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM), addressing critical challenges in digital heritage documentation. The study demonstrates that combining TLS for structural reconstruction with photogrammetry—particularly effective for surface details, radiometric data, and irregular objects—yields superior 3D textured models. Hybrid workflows, tested at two historic sites (Matbouli House Museum in UNESCO-listed Historic Jeddah and Asfan Castle), show that TLS excels in capturing basic shapes while photogrammetry refines geometry and parametric tracing, even on complex facades or shadowed terrains. By leveraging ICP algorithms for data registration, the approach achieves reliable BIM mapping of intricate architectural elements, offering a scalable solution for heritage preservation.
