Bibliographic Catalogue of the Marine Benthic Algae in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands)

A comprehensive catalogue of marine benthic algae in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) reveals 335 species across ten Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, atolls, and shoals. The study organizes these species into four phyla—Cyanobacteria, Rhodophyta, Ochrophyta, and Chlorophyta—and provides detailed taxonomic listings with reference citations for each location. Notably, French Frigate Shoals hosts the highest diversity (173 species), while Nihoa Island has the lowest (33). The catalogue includes a chronological island-reference index and brief notes on select species, offering a foundational resource for algal research in this UNESCO-listed marine region.
